The sight of water pooling on your basement floor is enough to cause homeowners to panic. The thought of thousands of dollars worth of damage, an insurance claim, the time, and expense to clean up the mess is not something you want to have to deal with. But if a basement flood happens, you need to know the steps you need to take to minimize the damage and get control of the situation.
Here we will outline important steps you should take when dealing with a basement flood emergency. We will also provide you with some advice on what not to do in this situation.
How To Handle A Basement Flood Emergency
Here is what you need to do upon the discovery of a basement flood:
Shut off the water: Shut off water access to the basement.
Shut off the power: Cut the electricity to the basement. Water may be overlapping electrical outlets which is a significant safety issue. If it is not safe, call your power company to assist you.
Call a professional: Timing is vital when recovering from a flood. Call basement restoration professionals as soon as possible. They can help you create a plan to effectively remove water from the basement.
Put on protective clothing: Always wear boots and gloves to protect yourself. This is particularly important if you suspect there may be sewage in the water.
Identify the source of the flood: Do your best to identify the source of the leak. It could be a floor drain, sump pump, crack in the foundation or cracked pipe.
Check the floor drain: Ensure the floor drain is working to remove water from the basement.
Check the sump pump: Make sure your sump pump is working properly to help drain out the water.
Start removing items from the basement: Start with high value items, and things that are not water resistant. The more you can move, the more you will be able to save.
Work with your restoration professional: Once they arrive on site, work with them to establish a game plan. Start ripping up damaged flooring and prepare the basement to be dried out.
What Not To Do When Dealing With A Basement Flood Emergency
It is also very important to know what not to do when your basement floods. Here are some important things to keep in mind:
Do not assume things are safe.
Do not go into the basement without first assessing the situation.
Do not enter rooms with sagging ceilings or walls.
Do not touch electrical outlet, switches, plugs, or items.
Do not use heat to try to dry affected areas.
Do not allow children or pets to enter the basement.
Following these steps will help you make the best out of an unfortunate situation. If you experience a basement flood in the GTA, give us a call at 416-639-1722. Our experts will help you start the process of getting things back to normal as quickly as possible.

I had an amazing experience working with Igor Goldshmidt on my bathroom renovation. From start to finish, the professionalism, communication, attention to detail, and quality of work were outstanding.
It’s rare to find someone who truly takes pride in their work and genuinely cares about the final result. Igor went above and beyond to bring the vision to life, and the finished bathroom turned out even better than I imagined.
Reliable, skilled, honest, and very detail-oriented. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for high-quality renovation work. Thank you again for creating such a beautiful space!

Our dishwasher leaked. without us noticing. until the water broke through the ceiling in our basement bedroom. It caused damage to the ceiling, wall, and floor in that room and also the hardwood floor in our kitchen.
I remembered dealing with them in the past, so on a Saturday morning, I made the call and within an hour of my call, I had the Project manager at my home. Half an hour after that he had a plumber in to disconnect the dishwasher and 1/2 an hour later he had a team in to dry up the water and spray disinfectant so mold would not grow.
The manager dealt with our insurance company. Because of the extent of the damage, and the fact that that they had to remove all of the flooring in the upstairs and the basement, we were asked to move out of the house. They did all the packing, put our belongings in storage so they were not hindered by having to move furniture around. They took pictures of everything they moved, noting any existing damage.
When we moved back in, even our books were back in the same order that they found them.
They estimated repairs would take 5 weeks, but we were home in 4.
They kept us informed of everything they did.
Great job by the entire team.

I cannot recommend Canada’s Restoration Services highly enough. We dealt with a stressful water leak this past winter that unfortunately led to mold in my son’s bedroom. From the moment they stepped in, they were complete professionals.
Andres and John were my main contacts throughout the process and they were so helpful at coordinating everything. They truly made us feel like they cared about our problems and the safety of our family. They didn't just clean up the mess; they helped us navigate the entire process, including coordinating with contractors and ensuring every step was handled correctly. They were prompt, incredibly clean while working in our home, and always quick to respond to my questions. If you are looking for a team that is reliable and actually cares about the safety of your family, this is the company to call. They checked every single box for us!"

This was my first time using Restoration Canada, and I must say, it was a very good choice. From the very first telephone call, I could tell that this would be a great relationship, and I was correct. Overall, all the workers were very respectful, clean and honest. There were days when I had to leave my house, and I was not afraid to leave the workmen in the house.
Alex, so easy to talk to, and always ensuring that the project was going as planned
John, his integrity is beyond reproach
Mauricio, so humble and honest
Pops and his son – again, very humble
I work from home, and the workmen were never a bother to me. I have never worked with a team that was so neat and tidy, I did not have to do any cleaning after the job was done!
THANK YOU all so very much, I am so happy with the job, and will not hesitate to recommend your services. You put the EXTRA in EXTRA-ordinary

I am so glad we called Restoration Canada when we discovered a leak in our basement at the end of last year. They send out a crew right away to dry everything out and prevent mold, and were so easy to work with. They recently completed the remodel and not only am I thrilled with the results (which included a custom counter modification), I am so grateful to the entire team for making rhe process so smooth. They even helped us through the process with our insurance company. I highly recommend them for any housing mishaps, they really made the whole process low stress. Thank you!!
