On July 16, 2024, a single storm dropped nearly 98mm of rain on Pearson Airport in just a few hours, overwhelming the city’s aging combined sewer system and causing the Don River to burst its banks. The Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway both flooded and shut down, 167,000 Toronto Hydro customers lost power, and Toronto Fire crews rescued more than a dozen people from vehicles trapped in rising water.
